Vivacious - SOLD

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

This piece, like the Sunset on the Nile earrings, was created to match a special outfit. The woman took a beautiful gold and red Indian sari to her sister, who then preceded to cut it and sew a custom dress out of it. Apparently there was just a tiny scrap of fabric left when she was done. I always admire people who are able to do that!

Blossoming

Whether evident or not, I am always trying for self improvement. I'm sure it comes as no surprise that it always seems as for every two steps I take forward, I inevitably take a step back. Sometimes two. But slowly, slowly, I am blossoming...

Buddy System

In late 2015, I decided I was finally going to learn to scuba dive. I've always liked snorkelling, but everyone who dives has always raved about it, so I reckoned it was high time I learned. Naturally I aced the classroom portion, but the skills themselves were a bit harder to master. The one I really struggled with was full mask removal, replacement, and clearing. It's really hard to not feel like you will drown as you take off your mask, put it back on, and then use a neat technique to get the water out of it so you can see and have your nasal passage unobstructed. The first time I did this as a skill test it did not go well, so my dive master instructor asked me to do it again the following day. I did it even more poorly, nearly panicking and bolting for the surface.

But. I stopped, slowed my breathing, calmed myself, and signalled that I wanted to do it again. I did it acceptably on my second try of the day. I was so proud of myself for facing my fear deep underwater and besting it. Actually, even though he passed me, I still borrowed a mask from him and went to do it in the pool a dozen times before I called myself "passed".

In diving you use a buddy system and make sure you are always very close you your buddy should anything go wrong, hence the name of this piece.

Seeing the Light

I've said before, I'm sure, that life is not black and white, but shades of grey. The same goes for people. We are not all good or evil, most of us are somewhere in between, and we all make mistakes, and have "imperfections". It is impossible to do the right thing all the time, as much as this prone-to-self-recrimination gal would like to believe otherwise. The important thing I think, is to try. Try to be better every day. Try to be more and more kind to other humans. Try to always remember that the majority of people (not all, but most) are just doing the best they can with the "tools" they have.

But also, to remember that not everyone has the same good intentions, nor same desire to always grow and change.

Baby Blues

About two years ago, I received a compliment that has stayed with me all this time. I was meeting someone to delivery a piece of jewelry to them, outside a Michael's craft store, of all places. (Don't buy mosaic supplies there, okay? Way too expensive.) As you do, we started idle chitchat, and I remember thinking she was so personable as she really held my gaze extremely steadily. Suddenly, she blurts out, "Gosh, I'm sorry! I'm staring! It's just that you have the bluest eyes I've ever seen! They're amazing!"

It's fascinating how the smallest comment a stranger makes can have so much meaning. I hope there are times when I have had this effect on someone!

Springtime

I'm headed back to Canada in a week, and I'm really hoping that spring will have arrived by the time I get there...last I heard they had a bunch of snow. I'm hoping the spring time colours of this pendant will encourage it to arrive--and the snow to leave--before I get there.

Karnak

I originally planned to go to Egypt in 1997. I never got there. Back then, it was somewhere I had always wanted to go, from back as a fairly young child. To finally go, almost 2 decades "late" as it were, was truly a bucket list item. One of the places I most wanted to see was Karnak Temple in Luxor. It was every bit as good as I imagined.

Sunset on the Nile - SOLD

Who doesn't love a good sunset? I know there are lots of people who like to get up early to watch a sunrise, but I admit that I rarely make that happen, as I'm a night owl, not an early bird. Sunsets are a golden hour, meant for sipping a cocktail, enjoying the company of friends. Even better if you have a good view...like over the Nile.

Out of the Darkness

I've been going through a bit of a rough patch in the last few months. I think that a corner has been turned though now, and I'm starting to find my happiness. I think I've learned a lot about anger. I've always been uncomfortable with my own anger, and I'm now finding it to perhaps be pretty useful on occasion.

Antiquities

A few weeks ago, I had the lovely experience of going the Egyptian Museum, which I've wanted to see for decades. NO pictures allowed of King Tutankamun's burial goods, sadly, but I was rather taken by this incredibly preserved statue of a princess, so felt I created this pendant in the colours of her neck piece.

Waiting on Bougainvillea

So I'm now back in Greece, happily installed in my usual hotel. The island is blooming, and there are daisies everywhere. It is still a bit early for the bougainvillea, which is my absolute favourite...pink blossoms cascading down the the sides of houses, over archways, and putting an extra shot of colour into the world.

Wicked

48mm by 35mm - Mosaic gold, black tourmaline in sterling silver

The name of this piece is the name of a Broadway musical told from the point of view from the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz. In all fairness, I do not know this musical, nor have heard the music, but the witch is green. Blythe has been referring to this piece as Wicked because of this since I created it, so Wicked it is. For me though, it's called this because I have had a "wicked" time here in Egypt with her.

Island Spring

I'm headed back to Greece in two days, and am very much looking forward to seeing some green! As much as I have loved Egypt, it is dry, dusty, and basically barren...it is a desert after all. I have seen pictures taken by friends on the island, and it seems so green and in full bloom, which will seem miraculous to see not only after the sojourn here in Egypt, but also because the island itself is rather brown and rocky rather than lush. I can't wait to see Santorini "decked out" as it were.

Well Travelled

In the last 18 months, I have been on 5 continents: North America, Oceana, Asia, Africa, and Europe. I tend to try to put different things in my suitcase every time I get to Canada for a repacking stop, but one item keeps ending up in my luggage over and over...a fuschia zip up hoodie (a "kangaroo jacket" for Western Canadians) that is a hand-me-down from my sister. It's been on 4 of those 5 continents with me, and is now like an old trusted friend. My travel buddy is getting a bit worn out though, so I may have to look into a replacement in the near future.

Baby Carrots

Spring is here, and from what I understand, even my hometown has finally rid itself of snow. One of the best things to look forward to as spring turns to summer is fresh baby carrots pulled out of the ground moments prior and washed off with a garden hose.

Infinity Pool

So when Blythe and I were in Stone Town, Zanzibar, we found ourselves really wishing we had a hotel with a pool. In classic "Fun Twins" (our self given nickname) fashion, we decided to crash the Hyatt with a little help of a friend who was staying there. I should probably note that since there were quality toiletries in the pool change room, we may have made off with some of those too.

Whew! Looking back at the past few days, it's been a pretty heavy week on the Mosaic a Day blog! Here's a little sunshine to brighten your day. It's finally warming up here in Egypt too, and I'm excited as tomorrow I head to "Upper Egypt" (South of here...it's complicated), for more sightseeing.

Remembering

14mm by 10mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Occasionally I get asked how I ended up living this crazy life I lead. The short answer is I went through a tumultuous divorce. After a long time of being unable to remember my ex husband with any kind of fondness, I've found myself softening over the past year. I now mostly remember the happy times, the times which remind me of why I married him in the first place. Which is helpful, because those memories make me feel less foolish for having married him. So these days, I hope wherever he is in the world, he is doing alright, and found his happiness.

These earrings have the colouring of the engagement ring I had then. I loved that ring.

Watermelon

I am sad today. I woke up this morning to the news, albeit expected, that my uncle Evan had passed on. Evan was a pretty special character. Born with Williams Syndrome, which went undiagnosed for years since it wasn't "a thing" yet, he lived a life that presented more challenges than a lot of us face. But face it he did, and with a sense of humour that with certain people, tended towards some pretty astute teasing. He liked construction sites, the library, going on the bus, and walking. He taught himself to play the organ by ear alone. As he was so much younger than my mother, and she had children young, he was almost more of an older sibling than an uncle in our family.

One of his great joys was food, which made his late diagnosed esophageal cancer that much more heartbreaking, as he was not able to enjoy his favourites for many of his last months: diet Coke, pork ribs, and watermelon.

Safe travels Evan. I'm sure there's watermelon waiting for you.

Towards the Light

I work pretty hard at being as self aware as I can be, and some days it's easier than others. We all have good days and bad ones, don't we?  But at least, it's forward movement, I think...always moving towards lightness, towards happiness. I hope you also work towards being the best version of yourself you can be, even on the days when that feels REALLY hard. I promise you can get there.

Hoarfrost

I may be in Egypt, but I am always inspired by past vistas and adventures. My last couple of days in Canada--so sorry you folks STILL have snow, I was treated to some stunning hoarfrost. Now, anyone who knows me knows I have very little good to say about winter, I don't mind visiting it once and awhile, but I'd hate to live there. This hoarfrost, however, was just stunning. Reminding even my jaded self that winter has its delights.
