Sisters of Mercy Project: Wrap Up

Each 28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

So I thought it might be nice to wrap up this project by posting pictures of all the pendants together. Somehow it shows the scope and importance of the project. I feel so honoured to have been a part of this.

I would be thrilled to do similar projects in the future. Perhaps you have a group of friends you want to commemorate, or sisters, or cousins. I also imagine a set of similar jewelry pieces would make amazing bridesmaids' gifts. As all these pieces are one of a kind, I think that makes it even more special!

Sisters of Mercy Project: Liz

28mm by 18mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver

So as you've probably surmised, Liz and I have a pretty special friendship. It began with a simple heart felt email on her part, and suddently we were sending each other novella length emails about all aspects of our lives. It took about 9 months but we finally met in person in April. There has been a bit of a joke about her being my stalker--all in jest, of course--because she knows all the details of my past pieces better than I do! She'll ask me to make a piece similar to this one, or that one, referring to it by its name on the blog. Most of the time, I have to go look it up to know which one she's referring to! Anyways, she's always been in love with Santo Sunset. So when I took on this project, I knew I somehow had to make her pendant look as close to it as possible. Hope you're enjoying it, Liz.

Sisters of Mercy Project: A Present

The woman who arranged the Sisters of Mercy project is one of my greatest supporters...you'll hear more about her tomorrow. It seems that every few months, if not more frequently, I'm sending yet another piece of jewelry her way. But she topped it all by tirelessly arranging this project, and spent who knows how many hours hashing out all the details via email with me. I also know that she likes to have things that match. So unsurprisingly, these little earrrings sneakily found their way into the parcel, as a thank you.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Maureen

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The picture I have of Maureen showed an incredibly bright, happy person, who I can only imagine simply radiates light and joy to everyone around her. As such, she received this pendant with warm gold radiating into the Sisters of Mercy burgundy.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Kimberly

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

I decided to symbolize the work that Kimberly does for others by trickling the silver down into the Sisters of Mercy burgundy. In addition, the picture of her that I received showed her as a very calm, steady person, and I wanted to make sure she received something calm and elegant.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Patty

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The picture I received of Patty showed her in a bright turquoise dress with a big patterned scarf. I was immediately taken with how dramatic and vivacious she looked. As a result, I knew that her pendant had to have something a bit different going on. So she is the only pendant where I used this deep royal blue.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Dody

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

For Dody, I decided to create a symbolic life path, ever growing and expanding.

I found working on this project very interesting, trying to ascertain what would be appreciated by each person, while keeping to a similar colour palette. I didn't want them to be identical, as I really wanted to honour each woman's individuality. But having only met one of the recipients in person, it was harder than I imagined!

Sisters of Mercy Project: Linda

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Many of the women receiving these pendants work for Dignity Health, which supports the Sisters in their work, as some of the Sisters were nurses. The colour associated with Dignity Health is an orange shade. So for the President of Dignity Health, Linda, I created a pendant that reflected both Dignity Health and the Sisters of Mercy.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Sister Mary

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

In some cases for this project, I was given a bit of information about what each woman's role and mission was within the organization. Sister Mary is very active in St. Vincent de Paul, a charitable organization. I am sure she is a beacon of hope to those she helps, so she received this "ray of light" pendant.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Sister Margaret

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Though I was raised Catholic, I don't really consider myself to be very religious. Spiritual, definitely, but not particularly subscribing to a particular organized faith. Nonetheless, I have nothing but admiration for these Sisters who have devoted so many years to their faith, chosing to be of service to others. Such remarkable faith is so commendable.

Sisters of Mercy Project: Sister Rachel

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

As the pendants have now been given to their recipients, I can now continue posting the Sisters of Mercy project. I wasn't given specific requests for each of the ten pendants, but rather, was given a photograph of each woman who was receiving one, and was asked to consider what would be appropriate and meaningful to each. Aware that some of the Sisters may never have worn much jewelry before, I wanted to make sure that they, in particular, received something that they would be comfortable wearing. To that end, I created a cross for Sister Rachel, who received this piece.

Outward Expansion

If it's not already apparent, it's probably worth mentioning I'm quite into both lifelong learning and personal growth, though not to the degree of the person who made me that way, my mother. If I'm not learning and delving into my inner self, I tend to collapse a bit. This pendant is a tribute to ongoing outward expansion.

Gratitude - SOLD

I am so often surprised by life's twists and turns, both the good and the bad. If there is one thing that you can depend on, it's change. If someone had told me three years ago that three years in the future I'd be nomadic (2 years, 4 months and counting), spend more time in Greece than any other place, and have seen and done all the things I've seen and done, I would have called that person crazy. But I think I also would have been fascinated...and extremely curious as to how it all comes about. But on the other end of things, looking back, the one thing I am, above all others, is grateful. Grateful to have found or created all the unusual opportunities that have come my way. Grateful for all the loving people who make it possible. Grateful for the friends who hang in there on my team when I'm not communicating as much as I should. Grateful to my amazing clients all over the globe who patiently wait for their commissions, and put up with slow international shipping. Grateful that I was granted creativity to turn lemons to the most amazing lemonade I've ever had. Thank you to everyone and everything that makes my weird life work.

Green Green Grass of Home - SOLD

45mm by 15mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email to purchase a simliar piece

When I returned to Canada in May of 2015, I had spent only 17 days of the previous year in my native country. The rest of the time, I was in Italy, Greece, Australia, and Southeast Asia. I remember staring in wonder at how green everything was! It was amazing how lush everything looked in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

I love this blend of colours. It's just so perky, kind of psychedelic. I bet they could make any day more fun!

Sisters of Mercy Project: Sister Madonna

28mm by 18mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

A number of months ago, I was asked to do a ten piece commission for the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic order of nuns, that is linked to an organization called Dignity Health Services in Phoenix. The client wanted to commemorate the Sisters' years of service with something special that the Sisters would never purchase for themselves. In addition to the several Sisters, a number of laypeople were also to receive pendants so as to remember their time and work with the Sisters.

This project has particular significance as these Sisters are some of the last of the Sisters of Mercy, as the order is no longer making nuns.

To that end, my customer and I began discussing what I would create. We decided on a custom size of oval, as she wanted round or oval to symbolize that the Sisters' work would continue on with what Dignity Health is building for the future. Each pendant--somewhere--would contain a blend of colour that was a close match to the Sisters of Mercy colour, burgundy. The pendants will be blessed by a priest before being given to the recipients.

This first pendant is simply that blend that is the Sister of Mercy colour we decided would be the unifying theme of the ten pendants. It is going to Sister Madonna, who is 78, and has been with the order for over 50 years! That degree of dedication is truly remarkable.

Spirit Island

If you ever get to Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park in Canada, it is imperative that you take one of the frequent boat trips out on the lake. Not only will you see some impressive glaciers, but the picture post card view of Spirit Island is worth every single penny of the trip. Just remember to book in advance in high season. This pendant reminds me of the incredible colours of that spot.

Decisions, Decisions - NFS

Since my fellow needs everything to match, I had to mosaic these ear plugs for him. The master plan from back when I did the orange, black, and purple ones for him, was that I'd do the other side in the colours of the next set. So hot off the press, the first (now) reversible mosaic jewelry ear plugs. I will do these on a commission basis should anyone want a pair!

I would like to announce that I have a number of workshops coming up in the USA in the fall,  both on the West Coast, and in a couple of places out East. Most are mosaic jewelry workshops, which is a great way to increase your precision cutting abilities even if you have little desire to create jewelry. In two locations, I'll also be teaching my "Building Better Backgrounds" workshop, a meaty, highly useful one day workshop. You can check out the workshops on my website.

Great Red Spot - SOLD

30mm by 15mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Some great new images of Jupiter have been sent back to Earth this summer by the Juno probe. I was quite fascinated by astronomy as a kid, and at one time thought I might be an astronomer one day, and Jupiter has always been one of my favourite planets. (Still feel bad for you, Pluto). However, this is not the first time I have represented Jupiter. Here is a very early work of mine:

I was absolutely thrilled when it was purchased by an astronomer.

My aunt is a major collector of my jewelry, which I greatly appreciate. A number of years back, she received an early piece of my jewelry from my family to mark a significant birthday, and recently she asked me to make some earrings to go with the earlier pendant. The lapsed time, however, means that some of the materials I used back then aren't still in my current stock. Luckily, she indicated that she would be fine if the earrings don't match the pendant perfectly. Hope they work for you, Alice!

A friend of mine requested a special commission but we weren't sure if the colours she was interested in would work. So I made this "test run" to try it out and see. I really like it! It's very dramatic, and very "mosaic-y".

Gotta Match! - NFS

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Most days, my man wears more jewelry than I do. Yes, really, and I generally wear a lot. But also, he has to match. He like sets, which I never wear. So after an appropriate amount of whining, I had to make a ring to match the "Weirdo" pendant I recently posted. It's been a challenge to find bases that are masculine, but this one is really great, and I've really been enjoying that my jewelry is going to men more often than in the past.

As many of you know, I take my inspiration from my life: the things I see, the people I'm with, the mood I'm in. Well, for the past two weeks, I have been massively inspired by the Olympics. I love how every two years, the world comes together to celebrate amazing human achievement, dedication, and perseverance. So in honour of that event that is finishing today, I have created my version of the Olympic medals. Congratulations to all athletes who participated in Rio. I can't even begin to fathom what it takes to get there.

Austin Sunset - SOLD

I recently had a very interesting commission request, wherein I was asked to make something that was inspired from someone else's photo. As you know, I am often inspired by things that I see and the photos that I take. So for someone to send me a photo to use for inspiration was really cool! Admittedly, she gave me some guidelines of what she was hoping for, but sent the photo in addition. It was really fun to interpret someone else's photo in my art.

So, if anyone would like me to make a piece of jewelry inspired by a photo you have taken in your life's journey, let me know! I love collaborating.
