Volcano Stuffed Olive

30mm by 20mm - Mosaic gold, rock from Red Beach in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

This island, as I've mentioned before, is part of a volcano that last erupted about 3600 years ago, and it's extremely arid here. I'm continually amazed, as a result, by how fertile this volcanically dry soil is. Olives grow all over the island, as do lovely little tomatoes, white eggplants, and katsouni, which is like cucumber.

The rocks here were scavenged from "Red Beach". Most of the beaches on the island have black sand, but this one is red, and it's worth the trek over a steep hill to get there.

Sunburn

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The Mediterranean sun is very strong. I have been lucky this year, and have not been sunburned. My base tan is now good enough that one is unlikely. However, almost daily, I see some positively beet red people walking down the street. Be careful out there folks! Sunscreen is your friend.

Santo Sunset - SOLD

Santorini, and in particular the town on the north end of the island, Oia, is famous for its sunsets. Every evening, people gather in the town to watch the sun go down in all it's glory over the sea. Personally, I think the show is better sitting on the caldera rim where you can get the play of light on the several islands that make up Santorini.

It's pretty magical, really.

Aegean Swims - SOLD

O

12mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

One of my favorite things to do anytime I am by the ocean or sea is swim. It's refreshing during a hot day, very fun, and good exercise to boot. It's even better to come out of the sea to a delicious carafe of local wine, carafe decorated by having stuck it in the sand.

Dysfunctional Viking - SOLD

16mm by 16mm - Mosaic gold, filati in sterling silver

Though many of my friends here live on Santorini year round, there are numberwho make the annual pilgrimage to the island for work and pleasure during the summer season. One such is my friend WIlly, who is a dive master at Santorini Dive Center

Willy asked me to make a pendant that had a dive theme, and was "like him". Willy's a little off kilter, so I chose to create this assymmetrical water ripple effect for him.

While he's gone back to his usual nearly bald fashion statement, Willy arrived from Norway in June looking like this:
Dysfuntional Viking indeed.

Rakomelo

Continuing our mosaic jewelry tour of Greek drinks is Rakomelo. Rakomelo is the kinder, sweeter cousin of raki, which I introduced you to yesterday. It is raki mixed with honey, and spices to create more of a liquer than a liquor.

Honey is a major product in Greece, and a very common breakfast item is Greek yogurt with local honey. I eat this most mornings here. Honey is also found in many of the pasties, such as baklava, and even finds its way occasionally into traditionally savoury dishes. All hail Greek honey!!!

Raki

Continuing the alcoholic beverage theme I finished with last week, I present Raki. Raki is a rather infamous Greek beverage, produced from the leftover grape skins after the grapes have been crushed. Italian grappa is similar, and raki is often considered Greek "moonshine". Depending on where you get it, it can be fantastic, or awful. When it's fantastic though, it goes down far to easily, and can get a person in trouble very quickly. I also love how it's served, in lovely little carafes to share with friends, preferably by the sea.

Mavrotragano - SOLD

30mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The namesake of this pendant is one of the lovely red wines available here on Santorini that just doesn't exist anywhere else. This pendant was commissioned by a lovely tourist here on Santorini, and she is just thrilled with how it turned out. She particularly loved that is was one of a kind, and that no one else in the world will have the same thing. Just like Mavrotragano.

Tangled Folly - SOLD

16mm diameter - Mosaic gold in mahogany

This colour blend was a request...I tend towards more harmonious blends. But the cacophony of this mucked up mess suits the wearer to a tee, as he's a bit crazy. But we all need a bit of crazy now and then.

Perissa Sunrise - SOLD

45mm by 15mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

One of the great things to do in Perissa is to either stay up for or wake up for the sunrise and watch it on the beach. I have managed to do the former once so far. The sun rises right in between the mountain that ends Perissa beach and the neighboring island of Anafi.
It's challenging to see Anafi on the right hand side, but you get the gist
It's a glorious way to welcome the day. Or bid the night adieu, as it was in my case.
