Greying Palapas

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

As the summer wears on, the bright straw coloured palapa umbrellas slowly turn into a silvery shade of grey. Its almost as if the tourists suck their colour from the palapas, not from the sun!

Relax

12mm by 12mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

One thing I love about island living is the laid back pace of life. No one is in a rush, and everyone tends to be in a good mood. When the sun is always shining, the food always fresh, and the locals--like my hotelier--always friendly, it's hard to have a bad day.

Speaking of Vassilis, I have found an amusing music video about Santorini that features him. You can watch it here

The "Best" Landscape - SOLD

30mm by 30mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

The hotel I am staying at here is called "The Best". The owner, Vassilis, is quite the character. Every morning, he calls to me, "My dear friend! How is life on the Best island?"

Of course it is always good.

When I say, "Of course it is good, I am on the Best Island", he responds, "My friend, I am very proud for you. You are very good student."

Somehow I never tire of this conversation.

Blood Moon Rising - SOLD

28mm by 7mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Sometimes when the moon rises in Perissa, Santorini, it comes up bright red. My dear friend Lainey suggested that I create something to evoke this spectacular phenomenon. They turned out very dramatic, just as that moon is. When it happens, even the harried servers decide to stop working for just a couple minutes to watch. It may be the most romantic sight ever.

Endless Beach - SOLD

20mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

I told you to expect a lot of the "Santorini Blend" this week! This pendant was made as part of a set with the earrings from Monday. They are destined for England, as a graduation present for a lovely couple's daughter, who deserves a special present for finishing her stressful course work. I hope she loves them!

Beach Heaven - SOLD

28mm by 7mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver

These earrings were made to go with the pendant from last Friday. I actually made these first, but apparently the recipient liked them so well that her husband commissioned a matching pendant. He also asks me every day if the ring bases I have ordered have arrived. They're coming, Yiannis, they're coming!

On another note, I have reached the halfway point of my stay here. In just one short month I leave my island paradise for new adventures and vistas. I will be melancholic to leave.

Santorini Dreams - SOLD

14mm by 10mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

I apologize in advance for the sheer amount of similarity in the colours of the pieces this week. Since making the first Santorini coloured pendant, I have been inundated with orders for more pieces in the same colours. Having said that, I think the colour combo is beautiful, so I can't say I mind!

Swirling Thoughts - SOLD

60mm by 40mm - Mosaic gold, Venetian cabochon in sterling silver

Every so often, I have one of those days where thoughts keep going round and round in my head, unable to be tamed or made sense of. The design I created here reminds me of that sort of day.  Sometimes confusion can be beautiful.

Little Island - SOLD

12mm by 12mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

One of the teeny squares in the Lainey designed Santorini colour scheme. In addition to mirroring the colours of the sky, sea, and sand here, it also mirrors the colours you see as you look out on the caldera.

Blisses - SOLD

14mm by 10mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Here are the earrings that go with Evening Tide from last week. I hope the recipient enjoyed the many blisses that this island of islands has to offer during her stay.

Case in point, my office as I write the blog. It’s a HARD life in paradise.

Grape to Glass

16mm diameter- Mosaic gold, smalti, filati in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

In addition to tourism, one of the major industries on Santorini is wine production. They grow several varieties of unusual grapes that aren’t grown elsewhere, like Assertiko and Mavrotragano. I have not made it to all of the 13 wineries on the island, but I may try!  As Santorini is volcanic (the current shape of the island  comes from a cataclysmic eruption that occurred around 1660 BCE), the soil is very alkaline, resulting in very mineral-y, acidic wines. I doubt these wines would taste nearly as good anywhere else in the world. Here though, it pairs beautifully with the food.

This pendant pays homage to the beautiful, green grapes and vines that can be seen growing all over the island.

Orange Conspiracies - SOLD

12mm diameter - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver

I had a sneaky feeling that the man who purchased the orange pendant "Aegean Sunshine" from last week might also be convinced to buy her matching earrings. So on that hunch, I decided to go ahead and make a pair, just in case. Upon showing them to him, he called me a bitch—and promptly coughed up the money. She was in the bar at the time, so I got to see the huge smile on her face when she heard she got to keep them.

Perissa Perfection - SOLD

30mm diameter- Mosaic gold in sterling silver

If you hadn't all guessed, I'm in love with Greece, and with the town of Perissa, on the island of Santorini in particular. Lainey, who you met yesterday, suggested I do some pieces that are reminiscent of this incredible location.

Here, there is a black beach rather than a traditional sandy or white coloured one. So I created this pendant to evoke the sand, sea, and sky of this most perfect of places.

Lainey's Earrings - SOLD

28mm by 7 mm - Mosaic gold, smalti, filati in sterling silver

My friend—and now saleswoman extraordinaire—Lainey requested some earrings in turquoises. I am really pleased with how these ones turned out, and am rather chuffed that she wears them every single day. She SAYS she just wants all turquoise jewelry, but I think she just really wants to emulate the water surrounding the incredible island that she calls home. And occasionally, she wears a bucket on her head.

Evening Tide - SOLD

22mm by 8mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

I’ve been really enjoying how the men here are really wanting to please their ladies with lovely gifts. This pendant was commissioned (as were some earrings) for a gentleman who is eagerly awaiting a visitor. I have yet to find out how the gifts were received, but hopefully well!  If they remind her of moonlit nights and romantic walks, I’ll have accomplished what I intended.

And yes, this IS a new size and shape. What do you think of it?

Diver's Choice - SOLD

14mm by 10mm - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver

These earrings were commissioned by a crazy gal, Becky, who came to Santorini to dive. She wanted something that would remind her of her dives here, with the black underwater cliffs and the greens and blues of the Aegean sea.

It should also be noted that I have stolen this name from Atlas Bar, another favourite hangout. Diver’s Special is the name of a pizza on the menu there.

Aegean Sunshine - SOLD

20mm diameter - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver

I’m finally ensconced in one of my favourite places on the planet, Santorini, Greece. I’m a couple weeks into my 2 month stint here, and have settled in quite comfortably to island living.  It’s pretty hard to be in a bad mood when you live in paradise.

This piece was commissioned by the owner of one of my favourite bars here, Visanto. He gave it to his wife for their 10th anniversary, and his smile when he told me of her reaction spoke volumes. Congratulations, my friends!
