Oceana - SOLD

40mm by 25mm - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver

Sometimes I get free reign on a commission, which is a true delight for me. So when a friend asked me to make something for a gal who lived by the ocean but is currently landlocked, I naturally jumped to task of creating a piece to remind her of home. Of course, it truly doesn't hurt that I have plenty of inspiration here in Australia.

Piece of My Heart - SOLD

22mm by 8mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I have a confession to make about this piece. I actually started it back on Santorini and I didn't finish it until just very recently. I'm actually embarrassed that I took so long to finish something so small. Once again, it's another piece based on the famous sunsets that the island enjoys. I'm sure it's no surprise to you that Santorini will alwayas have a piece of my heart. I have seen a few sunsets in Australia, truly gorgeous ones, but they don't quite get me in the "feels" like Santo sunsets do. They ARE however, incredible in their own right, and I do promise a jewel or two based on how they look...

Go with the Flow - SOLD

28mm by 7mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

I have found, generally, that life goes better if you don't fight it too much. When I can "get in the flow", and not get too fixated on a predetermined outcome, it never ceases to amaze me how the ultimate outcome often ends up better--albeit usually different from--the outcome managed to not my heart set on. And as a special bonus, if an outcome ISN'T what I wanted, or is worse than imagined, I usually end up stronger and wiser. Yup, life's kind of a win-win situation if you let it be one.

Abundance - SOLD

65mm by 20mm - Mosaic gold, filati, freshwater pearls in sterling silver

I've had a few folks who have written me, mentioning their dismay that so much of my work is sold even before it is posted. I admittedly try to balance my time between working on commissions and doing pieces that are in my head needing to get out. In case I haven't said it before, if something you like is already spoken for, I am more than thrilled to created you something similar, and maybe even more to your taste.

Case in point, this piece was created on commission for dear friend of mine who purchased a pendant similar to this one some years ago. Wanting a gift for a good friend, she decided to ask me to make something like the one she already has.

If you have been thinking of requesting a custom piece, please give me as much warning as possible. With my nomadic lifestyle, I don't always have access to a suitable workspace, so can't always accommodate "rush" requests.

Reminiscences - SOLD

28mm by 7mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

A few of you might remember this colour gradient from a piece I created while on Santorini. I decided it was too good to not use again, so here is the same idea in earrings. The creation of these might be about as multinational as one can get though. I created these today in Australia, listening to an all Canadian playlist, thinking about magical Greek sunsets. But mostly, feeling universally blessed.

ABC - SOLD

45mm diameter - Mosaic gold, Venetian glass cabochon in sterling silver

ABC can often be the short form in wine drinking for “Anything But Chardonnay”. However, since I’m pretty sure the owner of this pendant wouldn’t turn down a glass of chardonnay, the intended meaning behind the “ABC” is “Abbie’s Beautiful Charm”.

Though created in London, this piece was commissioned in Greece by Abbie’s very generous father, who turns 50 today. Happy Birthday, Alex!!! Much love to you...

Bold and Beautiful - SOLD

30mm by 15mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The only piece I managed to create in Canada was this ring, commissioned for my aunt Alice by my cousin in honour of her 70th birthday. The rumour around the family is that she wore it to my brother’s 50th birthday party yesterday, and it was much admired. Happy Belated Birthday Alice, and Happy Birthday Mike!

Last Few Days - SOLD

30mm by 15mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The last few days on Santorini were so bittersweet, and this was my final piece made there, a commission in the "Santorini colours" that were so popular. It is over a month now since I left Greece, and I miss my island home, and my many friends, very keenly. I can't wait to see you all again, hopefully much sooner than later.

My apologies for the interruption in Mosaic a Day service. Life has been extremely hectic for the last month, as I had a whirlwind travel stint through London, to Edmonton, Canada, where I taught a workshop and saw family and friends, to Australia, which I will call home for the next two months. There will be a couple posts this week, then another break until I arrive at my next planned nomadic studio. On the plus side, you can expect lots of fresh inspiration as I explore my new surroundings.

Volcano Stuffed Olive

30mm by 20mm - Mosaic gold, rock from Red Beach in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

This island, as I've mentioned before, is part of a volcano that last erupted about 3600 years ago, and it's extremely arid here. I'm continually amazed, as a result, by how fertile this volcanically dry soil is. Olives grow all over the island, as do lovely little tomatoes, white eggplants, and katsouni, which is like cucumber.

The rocks here were scavenged from "Red Beach". Most of the beaches on the island have black sand, but this one is red, and it's worth the trek over a steep hill to get there.

Sunburn

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

The Mediterranean sun is very strong. I have been lucky this year, and have not been sunburned. My base tan is now good enough that one is unlikely. However, almost daily, I see some positively beet red people walking down the street. Be careful out there folks! Sunscreen is your friend.

Santo Sunset - SOLD

65mm by 20mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Santorini, and in particular the town on the north end of the island, Oia, is famous for its sunsets. Every evening, people gather in the town to watch the sun go down in all it's glory over the sea. Personally, I think the show is better sitting on the caldera rim where you can get the play of light on the several islands that make up Santorini.

It's pretty magical, really.

Aegean Swims - SOLD

O

12mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

One of my favorite things to do anytime I am by the ocean or sea is swim. It's refreshing during a hot day, very fun, and good exercise to boot. It's even better to come out of the sea to a delicious carafe of local wine, carafe decorated by having stuck it in the sand.

Dysfunctional Viking - SOLD

16mm by 16mm - Mosaic gold, filati in sterling silver

Though many of my friends here live on Santorini year round, there are numberwho make the annual pilgrimage to the island for work and pleasure during the summer season. One such is my friend WIlly, who is a dive master at Santorini Dive Center

Willy asked me to make a pendant that had a dive theme, and was "like him". Willy's a little off kilter, so I chose to create this assymmetrical water ripple effect for him.

While he's gone back to his usual nearly bald fashion statement, Willy arrived from Norway in June looking like this:
Dysfuntional Viking indeed.

Rakomelo

16mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Continuing our mosaic jewelry tour of Greek drinks is Rakomelo. Rakomelo is the kinder, sweeter cousin of raki, which I introduced you to yesterday. It is raki mixed with honey, and spices to create more of a liquer than a liquor.

Honey is a major product in Greece, and a very common breakfast item is Greek yogurt with local honey. I eat this most mornings here. Honey is also found in many of the pasties, such as baklava, and even finds its way occasionally into traditionally savoury dishes. All hail Greek honey!!!

Raki

16mm by 16mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Continuing the alcoholic beverage theme I finished with last week, I present Raki. Raki is a rather infamous Greek beverage, produced from the leftover grape skins after the grapes have been crushed. Italian grappa is similar, and raki is often considered Greek "moonshine". Depending on where you get it, it can be fantastic, or awful. When it's fantastic though, it goes down far to easily, and can get a person in trouble very quickly. I also love how it's served, in lovely little carafes to share with friends, preferably by the sea.

Mavrotragano - SOLD

30mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

The namesake of this pendant is one of the lovely red wines available here on Santorini that just doesn't exist anywhere else. This pendant was commissioned by a lovely tourist here on Santorini, and she is just thrilled with how it turned out. She particularly loved that is was one of a kind, and that no one else in the world will have the same thing. Just like Mavrotragano.

Tangled Folly - SOLD

16mm diameter - Mosaic gold in mahogany

This colour blend was a request...I tend towards more harmonious blends. But the cacophony of this mucked up mess suits the wearer to a tee, as he's a bit crazy. But we all need a bit of crazy now and then.

Perissa Sunrise - SOLD

45mm by 15mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

One of the great things to do in Perissa is to either stay up for or wake up for the sunrise and watch it on the beach. I have managed to do the former once so far. The sun rises right in between the mountain that ends Perissa beach and the neighboring island of Anafi.
It's challenging to see Anafi on the right hand side, but you get the gist
It's a glorious way to welcome the day. Or bid the night adieu, as it was in my case.

Greying Palapas

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

As the summer wears on, the bright straw coloured palapa umbrellas slowly turn into a silvery shade of grey. Its almost as if the tourists suck their colour from the palapas, not from the sun!

Relax

12mm by 12mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

One thing I love about island living is the laid back pace of life. No one is in a rush, and everyone tends to be in a good mood. When the sun is always shining, the food always fresh, and the locals--like my hotelier--always friendly, it's hard to have a bad day.

Speaking of Vassilis, I have found an amusing music video about Santorini that features him. You can watch it here
