Molten--SOLD

65mm by 20mm - Mosaic gold and dichroic glass in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I started this week with a whisper, so now I'm ending it with a bang.  To appreciate this one, I felt a side shot was also required. It's made of the blackest black gold I have ever seen.  I got to hand pick this gold when I was at the Orsoni factory this past summer.  While it's a simple matter to order the Orsoni products in North America, there was nothing like being able to choose exactly what I wanted; as with any handmade product, there are variations from batch to batch.

Moody Blues--SOLD

16mm diameter - Orsoni mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I just love the colours in this one.  In fact, I came very close to keeping it for myself. You'd think that as a artist jeweller I'd own many pieces of my own work, but in fact I only have 3. I have multiple friends who own more than I do!  Perhaps I shall have to remedy this in the future.

Turquoise Drops - SOLD

Each 28mm by 7 mm - Mosaic gold, smalti, filati, in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Even though the earrings were just a trial item, I've already done more than one pair.   I think these might even be cuter in turquoise than the gold, not that it's a competition.  I may even have to make a pair for myself sometime...

Cherry Blossom--SOLD

16mm diameter - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

No matter what I've tried, I cannot get the colour right on this photo.  The pendant in the photo somehow is more "orange" than in real life.  It's truly very cerise in colour, in part due to the fabulous hot pink mosaic gold I acquired about 9 years ago that I put in it.

I don't use that particular stash of gold very often, despite there being about 10 exciting colours, as it's a nightmare to work with.  It is also no longer made, so when it's gone, it's gone.

Whisper--SOLD

12mm by 12 mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I'm starting this week with a whisper, by posting the smallest pendant I've ever done.  It's just a mere 12mm a side, less than 1/2 inch.  It's teeny. Really teeny.

I'm a big fan of large jewelry, and so tend towards creating larger pieces, but this smaller one is so very charming to me. As I'm working towards expanding my jewelry line up, I thought one way I could do this was to create even smaller works. Receiving these mountings was so fun...these little itty bitty bases were just so very adorable, I couldn't wait to use them.

Bluesy Jazz--SOLD

16mm square - Orsoni mosaic gold in sterling silver

You may or may not have noticed I occasionally put the word "Orsoni" in the materials in association with the mosaic gold.  For those of you who aren't familiar with mosaic materials, mosaic gold is a type of glass with embedded 24k gold leaf.  It's made by manufacturers of another mosaic material, smalti, and is sometimes therefore called gold smalti. The gold leaf is put on a thick layer of glass, topped with an extremely thin piece of mouth blown glass, which can be either clear or coloured.  This "sandwich" is then put through the furnace to fuse all the layers together permanently.

Almost every piece of jewelry I make contains at least some of this mosaic gold.  I have a fairly decent stash of the stuff, and am always attempting to find new colours, whether by acquiring vintage mosaic. However, my favourite to use is the Orsoni mosaic gold as it cuts so beautifully and they have incredible, vibrant colours, not just the traditional white and natural golds. So when I use only Orsoni golds in a piece, I like to mention just who it is who provided my beautiful materials. www.orsoni.com

Golden Columns

Each 28mm x 7mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

Bet you weren't expecting these! I have been resisting doing earrings for a very long time. Nope, not gonna do 'em. However, I've been getting numerous requests for them over the years, and those requests have become more frequent. So, when I found these bases, I capitulated.

Dang it. They're cute.

Peachy Keen--SOLD

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic Gold, Smalti in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Despite being one of my most popular pendant shapes, I will say these teeny ovals are a bit of a pain. Every single edge piece has to be very carefully shaped to lay perfectly against the wall of the mounting. If you've ever cut glass at this size, you'll know just how difficult it is.  Often I have to cut a piece multiple times before I get the perfect piece. And just when I think the next cut will be THE one, the glass speck I'm attempting to cut crumbles into even smaller dust. Some days the experience is an exercise in frustration.

But it's just all part of my painstaking process.  I aim to create the best quality I possibly can, every day, with no shortcuts. M3 Gallery has just posted a blog article about this facet of my jewelry. After years of blogging about my own work, it's a huge thrill to have someone else chime in!

All Lined Up--SOLD

48mm by 35mm- Mosaic gold, freshwater pearls, electroplated Labradorite in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

It's been a little over a week since I posted a large pendant. I really like how this one turned out.  This particular gold blend has a some interesting textured golds in it, and they have a gorgeous pale blonde quality to them, much lighter than regular gold.

I like how this one is similar to some of my earlier Mosaic a Day wall panels. "Hanging Out" in particular is similar.  I really do think of these mosaic pendants as very small wearable art pieces, so I always like when my fine art style shows through so clearly in my jewelry.

Welcome to another week of MaD!  I've got a few fun ideas that I'm ruminating on for this week, so I hope they turn out well.  In the meantime, enjoy this baby blue number.

I will be in Tucson, Arizona for much of November. If you or anyone you know might be interested in some private mosaic lessons while I'm there, please feel free to contact me for details. I'm well versed on a many aspects of mosaic making, and would be happy to teach any of these.

A Touch of Gold - SOLD

16mm diameter - Mosaic Golds in Sterling Silver
Email for Purchase Info

This one of the more wee pendants that I do. It's just 16mm across, or for those Imperial system folks, 5/8 inch. I myself like wearing big jewelry, but these little ones are so sweet that I think I should make one for myself.

It's just 5 weeks until I teach Precision Mosaic Jewelry in North Carolina at M3 Gallery. I've been astounded by the number of folks planning on travelling there to learn all the trick and tips I use to create my jewelry.  It's a challenging workshop, but so rewarding. If you'd like more information, visit M3's website.

Autumn Oval

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic golds in sterling silver
Email for purchase info

I must really be enjoying the fall display here!  The colours on this pendant are the exact colours I see when I look out the window.  Yesterday the turning maple trees looked almost fuchsia in the rain, and the sight of them was absolutely awe inspiring.

I am in the process of trying to find a number of high end galleries and stores around the world to carry my jewelry. If there is a place you know of that would be a good fit, please let me know.

Starry Blue Pendant

20mm diameter - Orsoni mosaic gold, millefiori
Email For Purchase Info

This one is a titch silly.  The random star millefiori, and the slightly more haphazard way of setting the pieces than I normally allow, make for a rather informal feeling. It's a bit of a departure for me, at least in terms of jewelry.

I have just received a new shipment of jewelry bases, and I branched out and ordered a couple new items. I hope you folks are as pleased with the new jewelry options as I am!

Autumnal Pendant #2 - SOLD

20mm diameter - Orsoni mosaic gold, filati in sterling silver
Email for purchase info

I was quite pleased with how the large Autumnal pendant turned out, so I thought I should try a small version.  This was one of those "brilliant" ideas that is better in theory than reality.

EVERY. TOOTING. PIECE. WAS. A. NIGHTMARE.

I will freely admit that it turned out quite nicely, nothing to scoff at.  But the number of times I nearly hurled this little thing across the room in fury is completely countless. Those who know me will be well aware that this is a strictly unusual reaction from me, but that's how ridiculous working on this piece was. So I am honestly amused by how serene the damn thing looks.

Blue Golds--SOLD

65mm by 20mm- Orsoni Mosaic Gold in Sterling Silver

Surprise!  I'm back in action.  Many of you may not know that I've taken up a gypsy's life and am currently wandering the globe while making mosaics.  Of course, a mosaic artist's materials are not necessarily the most travel friendly, so I've made the decision to focus on jewelry for the next while.  I hope to be able to create the occasional small art mosaic as well, depending on the studio set up.  My first nomadic studio is just lovely!

I also wanted to mention a huge honour that the Institute of Mosaic Art has bestowed upon me.  A number of weeks back they began a "Mosaic Workout" blog, inspired by Mosaic  a Day.  Each week they pick a theme, and participants create a small mosaic along the theme's lines. I was the guest theme creator for Week 16, and based my theme on my "Swept Floor".  I can't get over how truly lovely some of these little mosaics are. It's definitely worth an hour or two to peruse these wee mosaics and read the stories of their creation.  I'm scheduled to teach a jewelry class at IMA in March, and I can't wait

Off to create tomorrow's eye candy!

Autumnal Pendant--SOLD

45mm diameter- Mosaic Golds, filati in sterling silver
Email for purchase info

In my hometown, the leaves will have already turned and fallen.  Here in the Fraser Valley of British Colombia, the autumnal display is just beginning. The faintly changing colours of the are completely lovely, and the inspiration behind this pendant.
This particular design of pendant is rather tricky, and doesn't particularly qualify as a Mosaic a Day as it took the better part of two days to complete. I also lost about 2 hours worth of work when I sat back and looked at the design as whole, realizing that my filati lines were not radiating outwards entirely perpendicularly to the "sun". I had rip most of it up, which is always a bit demoralizing.

Red Pendant - SOLD

20mm diameter- Mosaic gold, smalti, filati in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

After a day of working with greens and blues, I decided some fiery red was necessary in my life. I love how the smalti gives a textured look to this 3/4 inch pendant.

I also want to announce that I'm scheduled to teach a mosaic jewelry workshop at M3 Gallery in North Carolina in just 6 weeks! Vicki Hanson-Burkhart, M3's owner, and I have been working really hard to get this November 22-23 workshop ready. There is still space available, so If you are interested please visit M3 's website. If you need more information, or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
